If you’ve ever had a dental procedure that’s going to change the look of your teeth, there was an element of mystery involved that may not have been pleasant. Whether you’re having your teeth straightened, whitened, or even having a more extreme cosmetic or reconstructive procedure, there’s only so much your dentist can do to indicate what the final product will look like. In many cases, you simply have to trust that the outcome will match what you’re hoping for.
But a Swiss startup company is doing their best to change that with the help of augmented reality technology.
How Dental Augmented Reality Works
The company debuted their concept at the International Dental Show in Cologne to strong interest. Here’s how it works: First, the dentist takes a 3D scan of the patient’s mouth cavity. This is already a practice that some dentists are using in their offices. Then, the software matches the 3D scan of the patient with a 3D scan of healthy, attractive teeth, and overlays the latter onto the former.
This model is then displayed on a tablet using a user-facing camera, so that patients can move their head and the tablet to view their new teeth from all angles, like an augmented selfie. Not only that, but the user can even tweak various options — again, in real time — to see how they would look. Want more or less space between the teeth? Different tooth shapes? It’s as easy as the click of a button.
Once the augmented set of teeth have been virtually customized, the dentist can send the final 3D model to a specialist to create the exact reconstructive materials necessary to bring those digital teeth to life.
Dental Technology of the Future–Today
Unfortunately, this kind of technology is still highly experimental, but we have similar technologies available to us today. If you’re looking for reconstructive or cosmetic dentistry now, we can give you a good idea of what to expect. Corpus Christi Center for Cosmetic Dentistry specializes in giving patients the results their looking for.
Professional whiting sends patients home with custom trays designed to get you your best results. These are much more effective than over-the-counter whitening solutions, and are convenient and easy to use at home.
If you have a chipped tooth marring your smile, or a gap that bothers you? You don’t have to live with it. Cosmetic bonding enables your dentist to reshape your teeth with a ceramic-based composite that is both strong and realistic. Your dentist can match the composite to your teeth so they look as good as new.
