Overview of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Children: Exploring the Role of Dentists in Diagnosis and Treatment.

This is a very, very serious problem that gets little respect or sense of urgency from many physicians.  I can’t count the number of times in 30 plus years of dentistry, I have sent children and teenagers to their family physician or and ENT for an airway evaluation.  The usual routine is:

  1. let’s observe them
  2. let’s put them on antibiotics
  3. let’s give them steroids, antihistamines and “drugs”
  4. let’s test them for allergies and do elimination diets

Not one of these is helpful for “immediate” intervention and that is what they need.

The long term consequences of not treating childhood airway problems is akin to signing an executive order for a much unhealthier life for that child than they could have had.

I am passionate about this.
