Have you ever looked at your smile in the mirror and just wished that you could have all new teeth? Porcelain veneers aren’t quite completely new teeth, but for most people, they’re close enough. Whether you have never been happy with your smile, or you don’t like what it’s become, porcelain veneers can probably give you a smile you will love. They’re also quick, easy, and highly durable.

The Most Powerful Procedure in Cosmetic Dentistry
Porcelain veneers have an amazing versatility. They can correct almost any complaint you may have about your smile, including:
- Gapped smile
- Gummy smile
- Chipped, cracked, or worn teeth
- Small or poorly shaped teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Discolored teeth
Not only are porcelain veneers capable of correcting all these conditions, they’re often the best option. For teeth that need to be built up because they’re cracked, chipped, worn, small, or poorly shaped, veneers give a more attractive result and last longer than cosmetic bonding.
For crooked teeth or a gapped smile, porcelain veneers are often called instant orthodontics because they can give you a straight, even, smile without gaps in less than a month, unlike orthodontics, which can take a year or more.
And when it comes to discolored teeth, porcelain veneers can cover stains that teeth whitening cannot affect. They can get your teeth whiter than whitening can, and the results last years, not months.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin sheets of advanced ceramic materials that are bonded to your natural teeth. They can cover just the front of your tooth or can build up the sides or top of your teeth as well. Essentially, they are replacing natural tooth enamel, which is for some reason (such as color, size, shape, or orientation) not optimal, with an enamel-like material that can be designed to your specifications. That means you can get the smile you’ve always wanted or the one you used to enjoy in your younger days, but have lost to time or trauma. In order to make room for the veneers, some of your natural enamel will be removed. This keeps the veneers from looking too bulky, and lets them create a smooth seam with your natural teeth rather than a ledge where food and bacteria can collect.
Don’t Let the Name Fool You: Porcelain Veneers Are Tough
For many of us, the word “porcelain” conjures up images of grandma’s curio cabinet, which was full of all the pretty, fragile things we weren’t supposed to touch; the ones that seemed to fall apart in our hands if we snuck them out.
But porcelain refers not to the actual material that the dental veneers are made of, just their color. The name is also partly historical: the first veneers used by movie stars in the 1930s were made of porcelain. (And they were fragile!) So although dental veneers are pretty like the shiny figures in the curio cabinet, they are anything but fragile. Chemically, they have more in common with the advanced ceramics that are used to make golf clubs, hammers, and even tank armor.
Porcelain veneers won’t stop an armor-piercing round—they’re too thin for that—but if you care for them the way you are supposed to care for your natural teeth, they will likely last ten years or more.
