As much as we love the challenge of a complicated restorative dentistry case, we have to admit that preventive dentistry is the best kind of dentistry. Nothing is as good as your natural teeth, so protecting them should be your top priority. Preventive dentistry ensures that you can maintain a healthy and attractive smile for a lifetime. And not only that—it can help protect you against systemic conditions like heart disease, stroke, and pregnancy complications.
If you are looking for a dental office where you can get optimal preventive dentistry, please call (361) 851-8274 or email the Corpus Christi Center for Cosmetic Dentistry today for an appointment with a Corpus Christi dentist.
Preventive Dentistry: Not Just Dental Checkups and Hygiene Visits
The goal of preventive dentistry is first to protect your teeth and gums. It takes a team effort to ensure that it works to prevent dental cavities and gum disease. Part of that team effort is our office, giving you a thorough checkup and cleaning every time you’re in our office. But the most important part is actually your part: brushing and flossing your teeth is essential.
Your daily oral hygiene routine should include brushing twice a day and flossing every day. You need to make sure you’re brushing for the full two minutes recommended to prevent the buildup of dental plaque, which are colonies of damaging bacteria. Most people brush for just a fraction of that that time—use a timer or an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to make sure you’re brushing long enough.
Even if you’re a thorough brusher and flosser, though, you will likely not get all the plaque on your teeth. This missed plaque will often harden into dental tartar (also called dental calculus), which shelters other bacteria, allowing them to attack your teeth and gum without fearing your brushing, flossing, or saliva (which is toxic to bacteria). This can lead to additional damage to your teeth and gum disease. Gum disease can lead to receding gums and tooth loss.
Protecting Your Whole Body Health
Preventive dentistry goes beyond protecting your teeth. Your mouth is the gateway to your body, and bacteria in your mouth can spread throughout your body. At a minimum, they increase your body’s bacterial load, which can make it harder for your body to fight off other infections. With more advanced cases of gum disease, bacteria can spread through your body and may contribute to conditions as diverse as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, pregnancy complications, dementia, and even cancer. Infected teeth can also serve as a gateway for bacteria to enter your sinuses and even your brain.
A Dental Bargain
Preventive dentistry is the best investment in dentistry (and possibly the best in healthcare). Not only are preventive dentistry procedures much less expensive than reconstructive dentistry, they also give you something that money just can’t buy: a lifetime of enjoyment out of your healthy and beautiful natural teeth.
Preventive dentistry also prevents gum disease, and can lead to reduced costs for related conditions: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and pregnancy complications are all expensive to treat.
