Gum disease or periodontal disease is a Biofilm disease. Biofilm is the bacterial equivalent of Kevlar. Colonies of bacteria living inside of Biofilm are protected from antibiotics and antibacterial rinses. It takes contact with the biofilm to break it up and destroy their bullet proof home. This destruction last about 90 days before the biofilm is rebuilt.
Dental gum disease therapies must be repeated to keep the biofilm from reforming. Laser light can penetrate the biofilm and destroy the bacteria as well as vaporizing the film. Use of dental lasers has been a great advancement in treating gum disease.
Biofilm is cosmetic dentistry’s worst enemy. Biofilm can lead to gum disease that will contribute to tooth loss and decay. For more information about cosmetic dentistry and gum disease visit my website at CCSmiles.com.
